Fourteen enterprises in Vietnam’s southern economic hub of Ho Chi Minh City have so far this year poured VND1.2 trillion (US$61.54 million) into stockpiling goods for the upcoming Lunar New Year (Tet holiday) to fall in early February.

The spending is under the goods price stabilization program approved the municipal People’s Committee for this year, under which; the enterprises will get interest-free loans to buy necessary commodities to ensure sufficient supplies before and after the festival.

Prices of goods selling at these firms’ stabilization places will be 10% and 20% lower than others, the VTC News reported.

The enterprises have stored 5,000 tons of pork, 2,500 tons of poultry, 11,000 tons of sugar, 1,000 tons of cooking oil, 22 million eggs and 1,500 tons of vegetables and fruit.

Ho Chi Minh City plans to have additional 100 goods stabilization places by late January, 2011, raising its sum to nearly 2,200 across its all 24 districts.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has recently committed to ensure sufficient supplies of 12 essential goods for the Tet holiday nationwide.

These products comprise foodstuffs, meat, sugar, salt, animal feed, fertilizers, construction steel, cement, petroleum products, medicines, paper and coal. (Labourer)
