MICHELIN - one of the largest tire manufacturers in the world, based in Clermont-Ferrand, France, was established in Vietnam since 2000. In the last 10 years, the Michelin brand has become well-known in the Vietnamese market & of course among local drivers. For this Vietnam-France special edition, ViB Forum’s Duc Quan talks with Mr Gerald Guy Bourget, Managing Director of Michelin Vietnam.
Could you please quote some outstanding results of Michelin after 10 years in Vietnam?
Our mission is to contribute in a sustainable way to progress in mobility by constantly making travel safer, easier, more enjoyable, more economical and more respectful of people and the environment.
For almost ten years now we have been operating through a local Representative Office where we have been capturing local demand for tyre products and services distributed so far in this country, thanks to 3 historical importers; Hong Loi Hung, Kim Long and Ha Long bringing strong support to our commercial strategy.
We started our Vietnam Trading Company in November 2009 with a handful of employees. Today after only 1 year, we have 36 employees serving our customers distributing Michelin’s tyres throughout Vietnam North to South.
Michelin’s dedication to making the best tires at the best cost, thanks to high technology and innovative products, contributed to the high reputation of Michelin tires in the Vietnam tire market. Hence, thanks to high quality and reliable tires, Michelin’s brand image has grown continuously among Vietnamese drivers.
With its commitment to road safety, the company regularly contributes to local road safety awareness events such as the “Helmets for kids” campaign, the “Don’t Drink & Drive campaign”, the “Fill Up with Air” Road show to remind drivers to check the air pressure of their tyres, as well as training tyre repair and maintenance for dealers and Transportation fleets to be safer on the road.
What are the competitive advantages of Michelin tires?
In line with Michelin Group’s innovation strategy, Michelin tires are able to offer the best balance between the key performances, because we believe that a prerequisite to making real progress is never to sacrifice one performance feature for another. This ability to combine maximum safety, even in extreme conditions, with excellent mileage and fuel efficiency is the result of high quality standards and a R&D commitment unrivalled in the tire industry.
Michelin aims to offer to Vietnamese drivers a lower cost of ownership, making tires longer-lasting and lighter and thus optimizing raw material use, and making fuel efficient tires and thus lowering CO2 emissions. Less raw material inputs and less CO2 emissions mean a reduced environmental impact of our operations and products.
For truck tires, Michelin ensures a lower cost of ownership as well, which means a lower cost per km.
How do you evaluate the tire demand in Vietnam when the country is facing some issues of poor infrastructure and transportation network?
The tyre demand is increasing rapidly in Vietnam. With the development of better infrastructure, more highways are opening as we already see in various areas such as:

Consumers will need to have better and safer tyres. Fleet owners will need to reduce their cost in many ways, investing in better tyres that will last longer, reduce fuel consumption and downtime because of flats.
What is Michelin’s objective in the next 5 years in Vietnam?
We aim to grow our presence in the Vietnam market. Michelin’s brand name has high recognition for quality tyres by the large majority of Vietnamese. We need to make our tyres available in their localities.
We need to improve the level of services offered to industrial sectors. The bias tires used on trucks and buses will be replaced by radial tyres quickly. Radial tyres will require different services to extend their life expectancies.
With all these projects we hope to grow our market share, being closer to the Vietnamese market and addressing the actual needs of our customers.
