Vietnam to Grow 500,000 More Hectares of Forests in 2011
Vietnam targets to plant 500,000 more hectares of forests this year to raise the forest coverage to 40%, state media reported.
To gain the goal, the country’s forestry sector has started handing over forest land to local residents and tightening management over plantations.
Among localities, the northeastern province of Tuyen Quang expected to plant 15,500 more hectares of forest to raise the forest coverage to 64.9% while the central province of Thanh Hoa will grow 15,000 more hectares of forests.
Vietnam is warned of poor forest management as the country suffered an area of 7,781 hectares of forests destroyed including 6,72 hectares burned in 2010, the government’s General Statistics Office said.
Seriously, the Southeast Asian country licensed Hong Kong-based InnovGreen firm to hire around 300,000 hectares of forest land in 50-year contracts, worrying local people about a conspiracy covered under afforestation projects by the foreign firm. (New Hanoi)
