Vietnam will spend nearly VND1.6 trillion ($82.05 million) on a national program to build rural areas based on new criteria in 2011, state media reported, citing the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).

The sum will be allocated to all communes across the country to help them build roads, provide clean water, improve the quality of environment and build cultural houses, MARD said.

Under the program, a zoning plan for 70% of communes and a master plan for the 2011-2015 period to develop new rural areas at district and provincial levels is expected to be finish by the end of this year.

The program will also focus on training staff involved in the program, restructure the economy, and renew forms of production.

Vietnam has around 65 million people or 25% of population living in rural areas which remain high rate of unemployment and low living quality. (HCM City Law, VoV)
