Chu Lai International Airport has recently been approved by the Government to become an ICAO 4F-class airport. When the first stage is completed by 2020, the airport will be capable of handling one million tonnes of cargo a year.

After the continued investment and upgrading are finished by 2030, this will become the largest international air freight transhipment point in Vietnam, serving B747 - 400 aircrafts or equivalent and handling of 5 million tonnes of cargo and 4 million passengers a year.

This is one of major contents of the Traffic and Transportation Development Plan for Central Key Economic Zone until 2020 and towards 2030.

The objective of the plan is to raise the transport demand in the entire central region to 101 million tonnes of cargo and 185 million passengers in 2020, ensuring annual average growth of 8.5 - 9.5 % for goods and 7.5 - 8.5 % for passengers from 2010 to 2020. The volume of seaport throughput in the region will reach 40-50 million tonnes of cargo and 15 - 16 million passengers in 2020, growing 15 % and 12 % a year from 2010 to 2020, respectively.

The Government also advocates developing five major transport corridors in the region, including the coastal corridor, the Da Nang - National Road 1A corridor (National Road 9 - Lao Bao), the Da Nang - National Road 14B - National Road 14D - Nam Giang corridor, Da Nang - Highlands corridor, Dung Quat - Central Highlands corridor, and Quy Nhon - Central Highlands corridor.

By 2020, the 4 or 6-lane North South Highway will be completed in the central key economic zone with a length of 470km.
