SBV and ADB Leaders Hold Press Conference
Governor Nguyen Van Giau of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) and Mr. Haruhiko Kuroda, President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), jointly held a press conference in Hanoi on March 1st on the occasion of the ADB President’s visit to Vietnam.
The ADB President expressed his deep impression on Vietnam’s preparation for the 44th ADB Annual Meeting. He said : “Vietnam is one of ADB’s founding members and a very strong partner in the region’s development and we are grateful to the Government for hosting our 44th Annual Meeting. I am pleased Vietnam will host the Annual Meeting which will be timely for Vietnam and ADB.”
“The Greater Mekong Subregion program has become a showcase for regional cooperation and Vietnam has been an enthusiastic partner,” said the ADB President. Looking forward, he went on, Vietnam’s accession to Middle Income Country status signals a bright future, but in the short term it is facing challenges to macroeconomic stability, such as high inflation. This will require some policy adjustments, he said, adding that further economic reforms, such as those being carried out in the state-owned enterprises sector, are also necessary to secure longer term inclusive growth.
For his part, the SBV Governor said the 44th ADB Annual Meeting in Vietnam is expected to be the biggest – ever event with 3000 - 3500 participants. He asserted that it would be a unique opportunity for Vietnam to publicize its image and socio-economic achievements in recent years. At the same time, he stated that the SBV is leaving no stone unturned in coordinating with other ministries and agencies to prepare for the successful ADB Annual Meeting in Hanoi in upcoming May.
