The Vietnam Rubber Association (VRA) said that rubber export turnover replaced coffee as the second biggest agricultural export of the country in 2010.

Rubber exports grossed over 782,000 tonnes worth US$2.3 billion, or US$3,050 per tonne, up 94.7 percent in value and 82 percent value. The value also exceeded the initial forecast by US$800 million.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said Vietnam might ship nearly 830,000 tonnes of rubber abroad in 2011, an increase of 50,000 tonnes from 2010. The value is expected to beat US$3 billion given favourable conditions.

At present, Vietnam’s coffee output comes after Indonesia, Malaysia and India. Meanwhile, the country’s productivity is the world’s second highest (1,720 kilos per ha), just after India (1,784 kilos).
