“Strengthening textile and garment industry cooperation between Vietnam and Denmark not only conveys the purely economic and commercial meaning, but also plays a role in boosting the overall economic relationship.” The Danish Ambassador to Vietnam, John Nielsen, stated this in the seminar “Vietnam – Denmark Partnership in the Textile and Garment Industry” organized in late March.
According to Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh, at present, garment and textile is the largest export earner of Vietnam. With export turnover of US$11.2 billion last year, Vietnam has become one of the five biggest textile exporting countries in the world. Especially, the industry plays a crucial role in economic cooperation between Vietnam and Denmark. In 2010 alone, textile export of Vietnam to Denmark reached US$ 64.8 million, accounting for 33.2 percent in total export of Vietnam to this market and increasing by 60.5 percent against 2009.
However, despite its position in the world market, Vietnam’s textile and garment industry is still facing many barriers and limitations, in which the most challenging is that Vietnam still has to import a great volume of materials each year. Therefore, the best answer to Vietnam textile and garment’s development is to strengthen cooperation with Denmark. At the moment, Denmark is considered a dynamic market in the EU with highly technical capacity and new technological advances, plus valuable experience in producing cloths and garment products of good quality. Denmark also has asserted its leading position in designing; especially, Danish textile enterprises have the advantages of modern production technology, design capacity as well as experience in human resource training. These are favourable conditions for Vietnam to learn, exchange and cooperate to increase productivity and the quality of domestic textile and garment products.
Deputy Chairperson of Vietnam Textile and Garment Association Dang Phuong Dung said the textile and garment industry in Denmark has a long history of development. With high technical capacity, fashion technology and equipment, Danish enterprises will assist domestic ones in development. Moreover, Vietnam textile and garment enterprises lack medium and senior management human resource and do not know how to organize and arrange this resource for more efficiency. Therefore, domestic enterprises should strengthen cooperation with Danish companies in the field to be provided with knowledge and experience in producing cloth, high-quality garment products, corporate management, technology introduction, textile equipment, and partnership in fashion design, thereby helping increase added value to Vietnam textile export products.
Out of 125 Danish enterprises operating in Vietnam, 20 are leading textile and garment ones. Ambassador John Nielsen emphasized: “Actually, Danish enterprises can bring new technologies, know-how, assist in training and supply machines and help improve added value of Vietnam textile export products. Danish enterprises are willing to share and support Vietnam textile and garment ones to better production technology, product quality as well as labour productivity; at the same time improve working environment and share experience in carrying out social responsibility of enterprises.”
