Education leaders and experts from 14 countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and Japan, brought international expertise to a two-day conference “Innovation in teaching, research and management in higher education” recently held in Ho Chi Minh City.

The event was co-organised by the British Council in Vietnam and Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Training Centre (SEAMEO RETRAC).
Three speakers from three UK-based leading institutions (Aston University, Cardiff University and Salford University) presented research papers on important aspects of higher education. A presentation by a director of Professional Engineering Masters Programme, Aston University on how multiple UK universities have successfully run work-based Master of Science Programmes was especially relevant to Vietnam’s context. In contrast to traditional programmes, all learning activities in this innovative approach take place in the workplace where engineers learn to integrate theory with practice using challenging real work projects which develop and demonstrate their professional abilities.

Besides, a range of other issues related to innovation in teaching, research and management in higher education were discussed. These include the impact of governance reforms on state-run universities, quality assurance, credit-based systems, computer-assisted learning, the application of personal wikis in teaching and the rise of private higher education.
