In recent years, manpower export has become important, helping develop human resources, generate incomes, improve working skills of Vietnamese labourers, and increase the source of forex earnings for the country. The Employment Development and Manpower Export Centre, an affiliate of Railway Materials and Equipment Supply Import Export Joint Stock Company (VIRASIMEX) is trying to increase its contributions to these tasks.
Diversifying manpower export markets
VIRASIMEX, a member of the State-owned Vietnam Railway Corporation (VNR), specialises in importing and exporting railway equipment, exporting manpower and expertise, and arranging overseas study for students in foreign nations.

In 2000, the company set up the Employment Development and Manpower Export Centre. After over 10 years of operations, the centre has obtained an absolute trust of labourers and domestic and foreign partners and played a decisive role in making VIRASIMEX a leading manpower exporter in the nation. To date, the centre has sent nearly 17,000 guest workers to many different markets like Taiwan, Malaysia, Japan, the Middle East and Europe. Notably, it arranged employment for nearly 300 female workers in large electronics factories in Singapore, like Hitachi, Panasonic and Epcos. At present, the centre is making a constant effort to seek and expand manpower importing markets to create best choice for workers. It is committed to ensuring the rights and incomes of workers and creating a healthy, creating and stable working environment.

For the sake of workers
In recent years, the centre has been very successful in exporting labour. Vietnamese guest workers in other nations are paid much higher than in Vietnam, while their rights and interests are always guaranteed. An employment contact is valid for two years and can be extended for another year. Regular monthly pay for a worker ranges between US$350 and US$850, depending on host countries. They can be paid higher if they work extra hours. These rates of income are dreams for many in Vietnam, particularly the poor. In addition to economic benefits, they also learn working methods, manners and foreign languages, which are very important for them after their contracts expire.

Speaking on the Singaporean market, Mr Le Mai An, Director of VIRASIMEX, said: "Singapore is a potential market where the working environment is professional; salaries and rights of workers are guaranteed. This will be a strategic market for the company to export manpower and send Vietnamese students to study and practice.” Seeing the potentials of the Singaporean market, in recent years, the centre has launched programmes to send third-year and fourth-year students or graduates to Singapore to study and practice in various areas like business, hotel and restaurant management, to acquire and improve their professional and practical knowledge, foreign languages and “soft skills”.

The company is now striving to become the most reliable partner of labourers and play a greater role in national development. But, to have better results, the company expects to receive more support from relevant authorities and agencies, particularly in manpower export.
