Canada Supports Vietnam’s Disadvantaged Groups
The Embassy of Canada announced on September 13 a grant of C$180,000 (VND 3.82 billion) for seven small projects, which is being channelled through the Embassy of Canada’s Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (2011-2012 Program).
“Canada is pleased to support these innovative projects that will make a real difference in the lives of disadvantaged groups in Vietnam”, said Ambassador of Canada to Vietnam Deborah Chatsis.
The seven projects will be implemented during the course of 2011 in the provinces of Dien Bien, Lao Cai, Dak Lak, Phu Tho as well as Hanoi. Four projects focus on respecting and promoting women’s rights (domestic violence prevention, legal aid support for lesbian women, anti-human trafficking of women and children, gender equality and participatory governance), one on comprehensive care and support for HIV/AIDS infected women, one on child survival through improved quality and access to health services at the grassroots level, and one on access to agriculture extension services.
Through seven projects, the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives priorities in 2011-2012 are to contribute to improved livelihoods for disadvantaged people, empower disadvantaged groups, and promote gender equality, women rights as well as disadvantaged people’s rights. Up to 82,500 people, including 420 local cadres, 4,300 ethnic minority children and nearly 6,700 disadvantaged womenwill benefit from the projects.
