Despite being set up just seven years ago, Phu My 3 BOT Power Company has already asserted its position in the electricity industry and played an important role in ensuring sufficient electricity for socioeconomic development.
Phu My 3 BOT Power Company currently generates electricity for the national power grid. Phu My 3 Power Plant is the first BOT (Build- Operate - Transfer) energy project in Vietnam invested by BP Holdings B.V. (a subsidiary of the UK-based BP Group), SembCorp Utilities Pte Ltd (Singapore), and the consortium of Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc, and Sojitz Corporation (Japan). Each party holds a 33.33 percent stake. The 716.8 MW gas-fired combined-cycle power plant uses Siemens V94.3A gas turbines and a steam turbine operated by a heat collector system. The facility also has a water cooling system shared with other power plants in Phu My Industrial Zone, and is fuelled by natural gas supplied by Nam Con Son gas field. The electricity generated from the power plant is transmitted on 200 -500-kV power lines before feeding transformers of the Electricity of Vietnam Group (EVN).
Not only generating electricity, Phu My 3 Power Plant also creates jobs for local workers. Besides, it contributes to the production capacity of the Phu My power generation complex, the largest of its kind in Vietnam, which supplies electricity for Ho Chi Minh City, the largest economic centre in the country, and surrounding provinces. Plant output accounts for over 5 percent of the country’s power production; thus, it plays a vital role in the national power network.
Speaking of favourable conditions as well as difficulties since it started operations, General Director Do Ba Canh said: "The first advantage of Phu My 3 is a guaranteed output because the power demand is on the rise, but it is also is the cause of the biggest problem: How to maintain machinery and equipment systems every year with the minimal impact on power supply. Fortunately, the company still manages to ensure power supply when the plant is under regular maintenance.”
Phu My 3 BOT Power Company always strictly complies with regulations on environmental protection and occupational safety. The company persistently follows the principle of “no accident, no human health impact, and no environmental pollution”. It was received the ISO 9001 certificate for product quality management, the ISO 14100 certificate for environmental protection and management, and the OHSAS 18001 certificate for occupational safety and health management.
In technical management, Phu My 3 always plans production programmes suitable for the actual situation, and organises training courses to enhance staff professionalism. The electricity industry does not need a large workforce, but its staff must have have a high skill level. Hence, the company’s employees are frequently trained with updated with new procedures and the company sends many employees to foreign countries to acquire new knowledge and improve qualifications. When the company was established, it had to hire foreign experts to operate the plant, but now its engineers and workers are capable of doing their own work. As a result, reliance on foreign expertise has been gradually lowered.
Not only being an excellent business performer, Phu My 3 is also very active in social development activities. Every year, it has spent billions of Vietnamese dong to fund social security programmes and projects in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province like financing eye operation programmes for the poor, funding dialysis systems for hospitals, supporting the construction of ‘great solidarity’ houses, granting scholarships for students, and donating gifts to the poor and the disabled on the occasion of major public holidays.
Mr Do Ba Canh said the current success is accrued from the company’s ongoing effort and spirit of uniting and overcoming difficulties. For the coming time, Phu My 3 is determined to improve the quality of staff to take on greater tasks and build its corporate culture. Besides, the company lays a particular emphasis on operating the power plant at the highest efficiency to ensure the power supply for the system to serve the socioeconomic development demand of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province in particular and the whole country in general.
