Trade Forum for Rice Investment, Production and Business in Cambodia
The Cambodian Ministry of Commerce, the Vietnamese Embassy in Cambodia and An Giang Provincial People's Committee recently held a trade forum on rice investment, production and business in Cambodia in order to provide Cambodian rice market information for Vietnamese companies seeking to increase Cambodian rice export value and raise incomes for farmers of both nations.
Mr Keo Sok Nay, Secretary of State at Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia, said: In 2010, Cambodia cultivated rice on 2.79 million hectares of land, harvested 8.25 million tonnes of rice, and exported 3.8 million tonnes. In 2011, Cambodia grew rice on 2.4 million hectares but flooding diminished output to some 8 million tonnes, reducing export volume to 3.32 million tonnes. At present, Cambodia has some 40 rice exporters. The transportation system is a drag on rice output and export in Cambodia. In addition, the fund for purchasing and stockpiling rice is also a difficulty for export rice processors.
However, according to exports, this actually generated a chance for foreign companies to form business cooperation with Cambodian partners. Vietnam holds an advantage here, as it is a leading rice exporter in the world.
