Named the pearl island, Phu Quoc is an attractive destination to tourists for its scenic natural landscape with national historical and cultural prints. According to Decision 1255 by Prime Minister, Phu Quoc Island District will be Governmental Special Administrative-Economic Region in 2020. This is a favourable condition for Phu Quoc to renew itself, concentrate to develop spearhead economic industry in comprehensive and efficient direction, really becoming the pride of Vietnam tourism.
Abundant tourism potential
Phu Quoc has the unique terrain with many beaches spreading from the North to the South and 99 rolling mountains and spectacular primeval forest. Phu Quoc includes all typical ecosystem types, including primeval forest, rocky mountain, mountain, grass vegetation, wet land, mangroves, cajuput forest, stream and river, waterfall, natural lake, sea grass, sea animal and reptiles. In 2006, there was great news for local people when Kien Giang Coastal and Sea-Island Biosphere Reserve was certified as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, including Phu Quoc.
Beside a diverse ecosystem, Phu Quoc also has many historical relics such as: combat base of Nguyen Trung Truc national hero, Gia Long King remembrance and Phu Quoc Prison. Therefore, local tourism products are engaged in many types of studies of cultural-historical, historical-revolutionary relics, local customs and traditions of people, fishing villages, traditional trading village, studying natural ecosystem. Not only for primeval forests, beautiful beaches, plentiful fishery, valued historical relics, Phu Quoc is also famous for internationally well-known specialties such as anchovy fish sauce, chilli pepper, and especially the world celebrated Phu Quoc pearl.
Investment attraction
Kien Giang has also made master planning on Phu Quoc island tourism development to 2020. According to the agenda of investing in infrastructure for tourism development in Pearl Island, in 2012, Phu Quoc will have an international airport, harbour, national cable to the island, complete roads around the island, North-South axis road on the island and other tourism infrastructure items. The goals are Phu Quoc will receive 1-1.5 million tourists per year, in which international ones account for 35 percent with total turnover of US$ 209 million in 2015, and 2-3 million tourists per years, including 40 percent of international ones and gain turnover of US$ 771 million in 2020.
To gradually develop Phu Quoc into Governmental Special Administrative-Economic Region, Kien Giang has implemented breakthrough measures in reasonable and flexible forms of mobilizing capital from individuals and organizations in all national and international economic sectors to promote Phu Quoc tourism. So far, there are 177 projects in the area of 7,931 hectares, in which 46 ones were issued investment license with total area of 2,842 hectares and expected capital of VND 48,702 billion. The province is also concentrating on forming tourism routes in the island based on featured tourism products for tourists in each area; attracting, mobilizing capital to build infrastructure in Phu Quoc such as harbour and airport. In addition, the province also appeals and call for investment from competent and big investors into luxurious projects of national and regional stature in fields of: luxury resorts, restaurant, ecotourism farms etc to attract visitors from key markets with large expending such as North East Asia, North America, Western Europe and ASEAN.
The province also attaches importance to improving quality of tourism activities, services and fostering investment, forming and developing tourism products of high competitiveness against regional and world countries, showing of Phu Quoc tourism brand.
