The Third Meeting of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) 2012, to be organised in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam from July 16 to 19, 2012, will discuss finalizing official reports and recommendations to send to APEC economic leaders and dialogue contents with APEC leaders at the summit meeting to be held in Russia. Major contents are regional economic integration, trade and investment liberalisation, TPP negotiation promotion and the roadmap towards a Free Trade Area in the Asia Pacific Region.
Mr Hoang Van Dung, Standing Vice President of VCCI, Chairman of ABAC Vietnam and Standing Co-chair of ABAC Action Plan & Advocacy Working Group, said: ABAC 3 will be an opportunity for Vietnamese businesses to meet leaders of 300 leading corporations in the region together with prominent officials, scholars and researchers from APEC member economies. Notable participants include the Bank of Tokyo, Komatsu Group and Mitsubishi Group of Japan; Basic Element Group and Summa Group of Russia; LS Group, Poongsan Group and Shin Young Group of South Korea; P&G and Caterpillar of the United States; and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and COFCO.
Holding the ABAC 2012 presidency, Russia set the ABAC 2012 theme of “Aspiration to Reality." Accordingly, ABAC will form six working groups with specific activities. Particularly, the Regional Economic Integration Working Group focuses on regional economic integration, trade and investment liberalisation. The Sustainable Development Working Group focuses on ensuring food security, promoting technology transfer and cutting-edge technology investment, and addressing energy security. The Infrastructure Development Working Group focuses improving transportation and supply chains, promoting green development, water security and ecological cities, and strengthening public-private partnership development. The Finance & Economics Working Group gives priority to promoting the stability of financial systems, monitoring and assessing the regional implications of G20 developments, and enhancing financing, longevity and economic inclusion of small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs). The SMME & Entrepreneurship Working Group focuses on encouraging people growth, developing policies to promote the creation of new businesses, and identifying policies to promote longevity and growth of SMMEs. And finally, the Action Plan & Advocacy Working Group will track the progress and assess the effectiveness of ABAC recommendations, developing action and advocacy plans for ABAC 2012 key priorities, and identifying and enhancing links with APEC.
In addition to ABAC Vietnam’s attendance at the meeting, the Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality (STAMEQ) will also be invited to discuss standards issues in regional supply chains. A side event called APEC Investment Conference will introduce the investment environment and opportunities in Latin American economies and the APEC Women’s Forum for Vietnam.
The hosting of the ABAC 3 Meeting and side events is a testament to Vietnam’s comprehensive integration policies and increasingly active involvement in APEC’s important cooperation efforts, thus helping lift the prestige of Vietnam in the region and providing a good opportunity for Vietnamese enterprises to popularise their image and products to APEC businesspeople, access leading corporations and investors, and expand opportunities for cooperation with regional partners.
