In June 2012, the Ministry of Industry and Trade issued the Decision No. 3491/QD-BCT to add new items to the list of machines, materials, equipment and raw materials Vietnam can make, including the steel pipes made by PVPIPE. This is not only an honour and pride of the engineering industry but also unlocks the potential market for steel pipes used in the oil and gas industry.
As a member of the PetroVietnam Gas Joint Stock Corporation (PVGAS) affiliated to the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam), PVPIPE was assigned by PVGAS and PetroVietnam to undertake the “oil and gas steel pipe fabricating factory” in Soai Rap Oil and Gas Industrial Zone in Tien Giang province. This is considered the first factory of its kind in Vietnam and is the most modern in South East Asia with a designed annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes. The facility is built on an area of 22.9 ha.

PVPIPE’s steel pipes are measured 16 inches in diameter, 60 inches in length, 6.4 mm - 35 mm in thickness. The steel used is API 5L X-70-grade steel, the 44th edition - the latest. The fabrication of vertically welded steel pipes will be firstly supplied to Nam Con Son 2 gas pipe line project, Ham Rong Thai Binh project, LNG project, Block B - O Mon gas pipeline project, and many oil and gas projects in need of steel pipes in Vietnam. In the future, PVPIPE will invest in additional equipment and technologies to turn out steel pipes for oil rigs, oil refineries, metal structures, thermal power plants and other major oil and gas projects.

PVPIPE’s big project lies in PetroVietnam Group’s strategy to diversify products and services and create new ones, aiming to reduce expenses on imports. This project ensures PetroVietnam Group’s initiative in infrastructure development strategy, reduces reliance on foreign sources, and creates jobs for domestic workers.

To date, the project has completed construction and installation of equipment and is test-producing 30-inch pipes "for Nam Con Son 2 gas pipeline project and 16-inch standard LNG pipes. In addition, PVPIPE is taking over the factory and preparing to put it into official production. Earlier, on March 29, 2012, API Organisation officially recognised and granted API Spec 5L, API Spec Q1 and ISO/TS 29001 certifications to PVPIPE. After only nine months, PVPIPE achieved certifications and became the first in Vietnam to attain API certifications for vertically welded steel pipes. At present, PVPIPE is trying to speed up its construction, complete development strategy and survey market demand to supplement appropriate equipment.

Located in Soai Rap Oil and Gas Industrial Complex, one of active industrial zones in Tien Giang province, PVPIPE has thus received a lot of support from authorities in Tien Giang as well as PetroVietnam and PVGAS for the deployment of the project. That project facilitates manufacture of steel pipe factory Petroleum completed and put into operation as scheduled. This has helped the steel pipe project to be complete on schedule.
