Vietnam's Seaports Injected with US$916Mln for Upgrading by 2010

The Vietnam Seaport Association (VPA) will spend US$916 million on upgrading wharves, narrow passages, warehouses and cargo handling equipment of 30 seaports across the country from now to 2010, released the association's 5th Congress held in Can Tho province on November 8 and 9 discussing measures to enhance the management capacity, increase investment and utilise the seaport system from now to 2006.

The congress also discussed new strategies for Vietnam's seaport system and the way to improve administrative procedures for cargo handling in order to sharpen the seaports' competitiveness. Local seaports are still blamed for high transport costs compared with other regional ones.

VPA now has 36 member seaports out of nearly 100 seaports in Vietnam, of which many area under construction.
