Seafood Export to New EU Members Likely to Decline
Seafood Export to New EU Members Likely to Decline
Vietnam’s seafood export to ten new members of the European Union (EU) is likely to decline in the coming time under the EU’s common legal framework. Accordingly, only enterprises which receive an EU code (meaning those who are permitted to export to the EU) are eligible to directly send their products to these countries. Hence, other exporters must improve their production and apply quality control programmes as required by the EU to gain access.
At present, the EU represents a mere 5.7 per cent of Vietnam’s seafood exports, much lower than other big markets like the US (35.3 per cent) and Japan (26.3 per cent). But it is considered a potential market since the natural fish sources in this region are diving and it will have a high demand for aqua products in the future.
