Vietnam Airlines Corporation on December 8 signed a contract with Airbus aircraft manufactures to purchase 10 Airbus A321, bringing the total number of Airbus A321 ordered by the corporation to 15. Under the contract, the first Airbus A321 will be handed over to Vietnam Airlines in 2006.
With the aim of making Vietnam Airlines become a modern, prestigious aviation firm in the region and meet the increasing demand for aviation transport, the corporation has conducted a comprehensive investment plan, in which, its fleet will be developed with a wide range of technologies. The Vietnamese Government has also approved a plan to develop the fleet by 2010 with 75 aircrafts of all kinds.
By 2005, Vietnam Airlines' fleet will consist of 40 aircrafts, including eight Boeing 777, four Boeing 767, 10 Airbus A320, seven Airbus A321, nine ATR 72 aircrafts and two Fokker 70. Vietnam Airlines currently owns 18 aircrafts, accounting for nearly 50 per cent of the total.
The corporation in 2004 schedules to carry more than 5 million passengers and post record revenues of over US$1 billion.
