An urgent issue facing Vietnam in the process of integrating into the world economy is training professional accountants and auditors for the development of the local financial market in the future. This is reason why the United Kingdom's Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) recently held a conference with theme of “Improving the capacity of Vietnamese Auditors”.
Mr. Bui Van Mai, Head of Auditing & Accounting Policies Department said: “With the birth of State Auditing Law, the requirements of accountants’ abilities are higher. Training courses will help the State Auditing Agency to have more highly-qualified auditors, bringing momentum for the development of the industry.”
Currently, ACCA has 1,141 trainees in Vietnam and 106 have graduated from its training courses and those graduates were recognised as members of the association. The most important goal of ACCA is to introduce to Vietnamese one kind of auditing diploma, which has been acknowledged globally. Via ACCA examinations, Vietnam can further approach international standards in its accounting sector.
Ms. Nguyen Phuong Mai, chief representative of ACCA Vietnam said that there were 28 trainees completing their training courses in the examination held in December 2004. They are now waiting to become members of ACCA. Therefore, in the near future, the number of ACCA members in Vietnam will rise to 134. Almost all of the examinees are working at famous auditing firms such as KPMG, PWC and Ernst & Young.
It is easy to become students of ACCA. Under ACCA’s regulations, those who have university diplomas (in any faculties) can register to directly participate in ACCA’s entrance examinations.
The Ministry of Finance has recently signed a cooperation agreement with ACCA in co-ordinating organising examinations for auditors to be recognised in Vietnam or internationally. It is now easier for anyone to become a professional auditor. The co-organised courses will use ACCA’s training programmes and are acknowledged by the Ministry of Finance. Graduates from the courses will have chance to receive certificates from Vietnam member auditors.
Mr. Bui Van Mai added: "ACCA’s involvement in Vietnam’s finance sector in general and in Vietnam's Accounting & Auditing Association in particular will help enhance local industry's position in the world. Their cooperation is very meaningful at a time when the country is trying to keep up with international auditing standards. Vietnam’s supreme goal is to obtain worldwide recognition of its auditing certificates.
