Vietnam's Woodwork Exports to Japan Forecast to Soar
Vietnam’s Trade Ministry forecast that revenue from wooden furniture exports to Japan will reach US$175 million this year and US$300 million in 2010 while that of handicraft products will rise from US$75 million in 2005 to US$220 million in the next five years.
The forecast is completely feasible as Japanese customers are fond of Vietnamese woodwork and handicrafts, particularly home interior products due to competitive prices, attractive design, and exclusive materials, industry experts said.
Vietnam is currently the fourth largest wood product exporter to Japan following China, Taiwan and Thailand. Last year, Vietnam earned US$150 million from wood product exports to Japan, up 11 per cent against the previous year.
The Vietnamese government is calling on domestic woodwork and handicrafts makers to diversify their designs and make their products more suitable to Japanese consumers' tastes and combine efforts to beat forecasts on product sales to the lucrative Japanese market.
