US$1.54Bln Needed to Upgrade Railway System

Vietnam will need US$1.54 billion to upgrade its current railway system from now to 2010, according to the Vietnam Railway Corporation (VRC).

The State railway monopoly VRC said the 300-km Hanoi-Lao Cai and 102-km Hanoi-Haiphong railways should be upgraded to meet national economic development.

Railways from northernmost Lang Son province’s Dong Dang to southern Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi-Thai Nguyen rail also need a modern fiber optic cable information network, an automatic signaling system and others to increase safety and transporting capacity of trains.

The total length of the railway system is 2,600 km with the Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City railway being the longest with 1,726km.
