Local Seafood Producers Explore Chinese Market
A delegation comprising more than 20 seafood enterprises led by Deputy Minister of Fisheries Nguyen Thi Hong Minh is currently on a working visit to Yunnan, China with an aim to boost Vietnamese seafood exports to the market.
As part of the visit, a seminar on trade and Vietnam’s fisheries industry was opened on November 15 in Kunming, Yunnan with the participation of around 150 representatives from Vietnam and China.
This is the first time the Ministry of Fisheries, in coordination with the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP) and the Chamber of Commerce of the Vietnam Consulate in Kunming has held such a seminar to introduce Vietnamese seafood to the Yunnan market.
At a press briefing in Kunming earlier, a representative from the Ministry of Fisheries said Vietnam aims to achieve around US$2.5 billion from seafood exports in 2005, including US$170 million from the Chinese market.
Vietnam has so far this year gained US$100 million from seafood exports to China, showing a slight increase against the same period last year, VASEP said.
The Chinese market is viewed as a potentially lucrative market for Vietnam's aquatic products in the years to come. However, the country's aquatic export volume to China has only been modest.
