Raising tax collection revenues in the context of decrease of many kinds of tariff is considered a difficult task for the customs sector. In 2005, the customs sector collected US$3.23 billion, an increase of 10.63 per cent compared with its plan and 12.96 per cent over 2004.

According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, tax collection in 2006 will see many great changes. Apart from basic legal changes such as Laws on customs and tariffs to come into effect, tariffs of some items will be cut following the tariff cut roadmap under CEPT/AFTA agreements signed with ASEAN members.

To fulfil this target, the customs sector has made a plan to closely control all sources of revenue and make full use of them, and to combat tax debt and tax fraud among enterprises. The sector will also ensure conditions to implement the amendment of yjr Customs Law and Tariff Law and new customs clearance applied to exports and imports. In addition, measures of tax calculation will still be changed towards giving more active rights to enterprises. The sector will also implement the application of IT to meet demands for goods transaction during the economic integration process.
