MoF Plans Infrastructure Upgrade for Higher Seafood Export Earnings
The fisheries sector plans to inject more investment into improving the infrastructure and technical transfer of the already-established seafood processing workshops and setting up new facilities for the sector, according to the Ministry of Fisheries (MoF).
The move is aimed to raise the refrigerated production output to 3,500-4,000 tons per day in 2010, said an MoF official.
MoF also expected that all of its industrialized seafood processing facilities would fully satisfy the sector's hygienic requirements by 2010 and have their managing system certified internationally.
This way, the sector might be able to diversify and increase the export of processed, frozen products, boosting its export volumes to over 890,000 tons by 2010, fetching up to USUS$4 billion.
In addition, the MoF will intensify trade promotion with a view to expanding its export markets to China, as well as African, Arabian and South American countries. The sector will also focus on its supplies for the northern midland and the Central Highlands areas.
Staff training activities will be at the core of the ministry's strategy in the hope of raising the Ministry's capability of predicting markets' volatility and develop timely responses.
