The Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin), the largest shipbuilder in Vietnam, signed 18 contracts worth hundreds of millions US dollars with both domestic and foreign partners at an international shipbuilding trade fair in Hanoi yesterday.

Vinashin signed two deals worth some US$300 million to build three 8,700-ton ships for Japan’s Kanematsu and ten 4,600-ton ships for Denmark’s Clipper.

The State-run shipbuilder also inked an agreement valued at $200 million with China’s Camco Co. to build a shipyard in the Vietnamese central province of Binh Dinh.

Vinashin also entered contracts with two local companies for rice shipments to the Philippines, Cuba and Scandinavian countries.

The ongoing 3rd International Exhibition on Shipbuilding, Marine Technology and Transportation (VietShip 2006) is taking place in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi from February 21 to 24.

With its recent vast investments, Vinashin has made Vietnam the world’s 11th largest shipbuilder, and expects to build cargo ships of 80,000 DWT and oil tankers of 300,000 tons by 2010.

As of January of 2006, the corporation has won ship export contracts worth over US$2 billion until 2010. Vinashin, set up in 1995, targets US$1 billion revenues this year, up from last year’s roughly US$690 million.
