Cho Ray Hospital has been assigned the responsibility of a key medical unit providing assistance to more than 20 provincial hospitals serving over 30 million people from Da Nang City southwards. This is a really heavy task for the hospital staff. In the effort of fulfilling the assignment, Cho Ray Hospital is lucky to receive the Japanese ODA - the first ODA source to Vietnam since the national re-unification.
The assistance project for Cho Ray Hospital was provided by the Japanese Government before 1975 with the objective of developing a spacious and modern hospital as a treatment model in the Southeast area. The project was re-implemented in the period of 1992 -1995. This has been a source of finance as well as a good cooperation for Cho Ray Hospital. In fact, the hospital has received and effectively used the capital and technical facilities from this project. Thanks to that, the hospital has a driving force and a better foundation for faster development. Prof. Dr Truong Van Viet, Director of Cho Ray Hospital said that, the hospital collective has effectively used the medical facilities and technical procedures in the cooperation process, and then developed them in economic and technical terms. For example, in the 1993’s Cooperation Programme, the hospital was equipped a CT scan 4500, which has been used and well maintained. With this start, the hospital has professionally grown up and found more capital to purchase three more machines for serving patients.
After the cooperation programme, Cho Ray Hospital has maintained the relationship and developed bilateral cooperations with other Japanese medical centres and colleagues. Currently, it has set up cooperation with the University of Kyoto to execute open heart operations. At the moment, open heart operation has become routine in the hospital with 5 -7 cases a day. The development of this technique has proved the great effort of the hospital collective in receiving and applying advanced medical technologies. Furthermore, the hospital has exchanged cadres with Japanese partners. Many seminars and workshops have been held with regular reports sent to each other. In particular, following the official government projects, the hospital still develops the cooperation through home training programmes. After the first and second phases in the framework of this cooperation finished, another five-year training programme has been signed. Accordingly, for implementing the national objective programmes, JICA sponsors the training courses on enhancing the professional level of the grassroots medical units. Obviously, Cho Ray Hospital is a clear example reflecting the close relations between Vietnam and Japan.
Mr Viet expressed that they want to develop Cho Ray Hospital to be the treatment place for the poor and meritorious people. The hospital has done many good things and wishes to do better in the future. Apart from that, the hospital wants to improve the service quality for satisfying all the health care demands for every social stratum. They master the most advanced technologies in the world. However, the patient rooms are insufficient. They desire to develop the hospital into a medical hotel providing hi-tech services with the best conditions and the most pleasant treatment environment.
The hospital staff wants to apply the world’s advanced techniques so that people need not go abroad for treatment. It has cooperated with many partners for equipping new facilities and training cadres. Hopefully, by 2006, the technical level of the hospital will catch up with the regional level. Many machines and facilities in Cho Ray Hospital are the most modern in Asia. In addition, with the investment from individuals and support from local governments, the hospital will make full use of its trade mark, the grey matter and enthusiasm to build a chain of satellite hospitals in many provinces. In the coming period, the Cho Ray - Phu Yen will be developed. The next work will be Cho Ray - Tay Do (in Can Tho) and Cho Ray MC - a hospital of regional standards.
