At the ceremony celebrating the 80th anniversary of Vietnam Customs, Director General of the Department of Customs Nguyen Van Tho emphasized that the past 80 years of development have been a journey filled with hardships and challenges, shaped by the unwavering commitment of generations of customs officials, officers, and staff. He affirmed that this legacy is a profound source of pride and serves as a strong foundation for continuing to write new, distinguished chapters in the history of Vietnam Customs.

Over the past 80 years, Vietnam Customs - originally tasked with tax collection and anti-smuggling - has evolved into a modern, deeply integrated state management authority that facilitates trade, plays a vital role in driving economic growth, supports inflation control, stabilizes the macroeconomy, and ensures national security and border sovereignty. Throughout each stage of development, Vietnam Customs has consistently upheld its mission of “Protecting national sovereignty and interests.”

Regarding the sector’s future direction, Director General Nguyen Van Tho said that as the nation enters its new era of prosperity, facing both opportunities and challenges, Vietnam Customs will follow the “four pillars” outlined in Politburo Resolutions: science and technology development, private sector promotion, legal reform, and deeper international integration, considering them as guiding principles. Committed to achieving the objectives set by the Prime Minister in the Customs Development Strategy to 2030, Vietnam Customs remains resolute in fulfilling its mission.

To achieve these objectives, Vietnam Customs will build a modern, coordinated legal framework aligned with practical needs and international integration, improving management, removing bottlenecks, advancing reform, and prioritizing businesses and citizens.

Minister of Finance Nguyen Van Thang suggested that the customs sector should urgently complete the development of digital customs and smart customs based on science and technology, innovation, and automation, enabling all customs procedures to be processed anytime, anywhere, and on any platform.

Recognizing the contributions of the customs sector throughout its 80-year journey, the Party and the State have awarded many prestigious honors to the sector’s collectives and individuals, including the Ho Chi Minh Order, the Independence Order, the Labor Order, along with various commendations and emulation titles. On this 80th anniversary, the Department of Vietnam Customs was honored to receive the First-Class Feat of Arms Order from the State President and a Certificate of Merit from the Prime Minister. These awards stand as testimony to the unity, courage, wisdom, and tireless dedication of generations of customs officials, officers, and staff across the sector.
