The Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai has recently given the nod to an amended plan on irrigation works in the Mekong Delta region in the 2006-10 period and vision 2020 with a total investment of VND14 trillion (US$886.07 million).

Of the total capital, VND5 trillion (US$316.45 million) came from the State budget while provinces invested VND6 trillion (379.74 million) and local coffers contributed the rest for the project.

The PM also required provincial governments to change their production structures, use water resources economically, dredge canals and prepare for the construction of flood control works and water reservoirs.

Earlier, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) submitted to the Government for approval a VND23.35-trillion (US$1.47 billion) project on irrigation development in the Mekong Delta in the 2006-10 period and vision 2020.
