Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corp. (Vinashin), the largest shipbuilder in Vietnam, yesterday signed a contract worth nearly US$1 billion to supply eight car carriers to Israel’s Ray Car Carried Limited.

This is the largest contract value Vinashin has signed with a foreign partner.

Each carrier, 185.6 m long, 32.26 m wide and 36 m high, can convey 4,500 cars and travel at a speed of 20.5 miles an hour, the State-backed Vinashin said.

The first ship will be delivered in September 2008, the second in March 2009, and the six others will be transferred in the six consecutive months, the company said.

Vinashin’s subsidiary Ha Long Shipyard will build the ships under the design of Italy’s Naval Progetti Company.

Vinashin also won contracts to build ships of various kinds for the UK, Canada, Japan and other countries.

As of January 2006, Vinashin secured contracts worth $2 billion to build ships until 2009.

Last year, the corporation earned $491 million from building ships for domestic and foreign companies, up 41 per cent on year.

The shipbuilding giant targets at $1 billion revenues this year, up from last year’s $690 million.

To receive more orders, Vinashin has built many shipyards along the coastline and rivers of Vietnam, which has turned Vietnam into the world’s 11th largest shipbuilder.
