Vietnam to Tighten Control over Tax Payment at Supermarkets

Vietnam is considering tightening control over tax payment at supermarkets in order to boost levies for the state budget, according to the Ministry of Finance.

Accordingly, tax offices will install counters at the supermarkets to record information relating to sales, tax rates and tax payments to investigate their turnover.

The Finance Ministry said that turnover declared by supermarkets is always low, although many supermarkets have expanded their businesses.

Taxes paid by many big supermarkets are only one-third or a half of those paid by other businesses in the same trade, the ministry said.

However, many supermarket owners have cried foul, saying the taxation department will interfere with business activities.

The country now has over 200 supermarkets and 30 trading centers.
