Vietnam Plays Key Role in ASEAN

Vietnam has actively participated in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and created splendid prospects for the future of the association since it became a full member on July 28, 1995, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem told local media on August 7 on the 39th anniversary of ASEAN on August 8.
 
“Vietnam plays an important role in co-operation between ASEAN and dialogue countries; maintaining the central part, unity and solidarity of ASEAN in the process of regional co-operation, proposes measures to expand and substantiate the grouping’s external relations through mechanisms and forums such as the ASEAN+3 (Japan, China and South Korea), the East Asia summit, and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF),” he said.
 
On this occasion, Khiem affirmed that Vietnam would keep doing its utmost to strengthen solidarity and foster co-operation, maintain the group’s central role in the region as well as in the international arena, made outstanding contributions to maintaining peace, stability and reconciliation in the region.
 
Under the theme “ASEAN and Young People”, various activities have been planned on and around ASEAN Day, such Opening Ceremony of the 39th ASEAN Day by the President of the Philippines in Malacanang, Manila; Dialogue “ASEAN and Young People” with the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Indonesia, ASEAN Family Day 2006 in London, he added, calling Vietnamese youth to work for a stable and developed ASEAN. in Indonesia, ASEAN Family Day 2006 in London, he added, calling Vietnamese youth to work for a stable and developed ASEAN.
 
Vietnam has attracted more 700 investment projects from other ASEAN countries with total investment capital of US$11.3 billion since the country joined the association in July 1995.
 
The investment capital invested by other ASEAN countries represents over 12 per cent of the total foreign direct investment (FDI) capital that Vietnam has attracted so far.
