VAMA July Cars Sales Drop 11 per cent vs June

9:16:16 AM | 8/11/2006

The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) has announced that the combined sales volume of its 15 company members in July decreased 11 per cent on-month and 1 per cent on-year to 3,350 units.

VAMA sales worsened in all vehicle segments, with sports utility vehicles (SUV) and passenger cars seeing the sharpest falls of 29 per cent and 24 per cent to 108 and 540 units, respectively.

According to a VAMA member, the lower sales volume was mainly attributed to the wider penetration of imported used cars into Vietnam, which prompted potential cars buyers to delay their purchasing decisions.

Huge discounts, attractive promotional sales programs and loud outdoor activities failed to keep on the two straight monthly sales rise in May and June, it said.

The July performance led to a 13 per cent fall by VAMA member companies from January to July to 19,240 units, it said.

Japanese-led Toyota Vietnam remains the largest carmaker with sales of 6,977 units in January-July, holding 36.3 per cent of the market shares, followed by Vietnamese-invested Truong Hai Auto with 2,827 units, or 14.7 per cent of the market shares, Ford Vietnam with 2,075 units, or 10.8 per cent and Isuzu 1,219 units, or 6.3 per cent.

Mekong Auto enjoyed the highest sales growth in seven months at 21 per cent, followed by Toyota, Truong Hai Auto and Vindaco with 7 per cent each. Meanwhile Vidamco, a GM-Daewoo branch, suffered the deepest fall of 67 per cent in sales between January and July.
