The National Oil Service Company of Vietnam (OSC Vietnam) has recently inaugurated the Southeast Asia’s most modern and biggest gas canister production plant with an initial capacity of 300,000 cylinders yearly in southern Dong Nai province.

The $6-million plant in Ho Nai commune, Trang Bom district is outfitted with advanced technology from Japan, the United States and South Korea.

In the initial period, the plant will produce 12-kg and 15-kg gas cylinders, and provide maintenance and checking services for gas extraction companies.

From 2007, the plant’s annual capacity will be upgraded to 500,000 cylinders and it will introduce new products like 4-kg and 45-kg cylinders, gas containers for automobiles, gas tanks, and 60-kg NH3 containers.

At present, the retail price of the plant’s 12-kg gas cylinder stands at $16, much lower than that of imported one.

The establishment is expected to partly tackle the rampant appropriation of trademarked gas cylinders in the country.

According to unofficial statistics in 2005, Vietnam had around six million gas cylinders in circulation, but up to 1.2 million or 20 per cent of the total were fake ones, which are considered “time bombs” in many households’ kitchens.
