The United Nations’ atomic agency IAEA has agreed to give $1.46 million to six projects developing nuclear technology in Vietnam over the next two years, the state news agency reported Monday.

The information was released by Vietnam’s National Nuclear Energy Agency, which had a working session in Hanoi with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Mohamed ElBaradei, Vietnam News Agency said.

The national agency said the projects cover industrial application, nuclear analysis technology, radioactive solid waste management, improvement of legal capacity for nuclear agencies, medical application, and related human resource development.

The projects are the follow-up to the 2001-06 program under which the IAEA extended technical assistance to 24 projects on energy development with a total funding of over US$2.55 million, the agency said.

In addition, the world watchdog provided US$1.52 million in equipment for these projects.

IAEA Director General ElBaradei was on a three-day visit to Vietnam to work on solutions assisting the country in developing atomic energy, review security, and ensure conformity to international treaties on atomic energy.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced last week that the country would sign the Additional Protocol to Safeguards Agreement in pursuance of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
