Vallabhdas Kanji Limited (VKL), the biggest spice processor in Asia and the leading spice exporter in India said it will set up a “Green Field” project in Vietnam to process white and black pepper.

“We chose Vietnam because it is able to supply rich agricultural materials and production cost here is the lowest in the world,” said VKL’s general director Ajay Mariwala, who expects the company may scale up production at a later time.

The director, however, has not yet revealed any more details about the project.

Vietnam, the world’s largest pepper exporter, cultivates some 52,500 hectares of pepper with an average output of 2.3 tons per hectare.

Last year, the country shipped 120,000 tons of pepper abroad, accounting for 60 per cent of the world’s total supply.
