Vietnam plans to start the first phase of Hanoi-Lao Cai Expressway project, the country’s biggest, early next year for completion in 2011.

With a length of 264 km stretching through Hanoi, Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho, Yen Bai and Lao Cai, the section of the motorway in the first stage will be invested with US$770 million.

Of the capital, ADB will give soft loans of US$150 million and commercial loans of US$545 million. The remaining is Vietnam’s reciprocal capital.

The 121-km Hanoi-Yen Bai section will have four lanes with a total width of 25.5m and speed of 100 km per hour, while the 143-km Yen Bai-Lao Cai has two lanes with a total width of 13m and speed of 80 km per hour.

The second phase of the project will be kicked off after 2011.

The Hanoi-Lao Cai Expressway project is of great importance. It is part of Kunming-Haiphong road corridor and belongs to a cooperation program of six Sub-Mekong region countries comprising Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, and China.

Implementing the project will contribute to the success of Vietnam-China governmental-level agreements building and developing “two corridors [Kunming-Lao Cai-Hanoi-Haiphong and Nanning-Lang Son-Hanoi corridors] and one belt”. (MoFA)
