Two-way trade between Vietnam and the US reached nearly US$9.7 billion in 2006, compared with nearly US$8 billion in 2005, according to New York-based Vietnam News Agency office.

Of which, Vietnam exported around US$8.56 billion worth of goods to the US last year, much more than US$6.63 billion in 2005, and imported only over US$1.1 billion from the foreign country, down compared to nearly US$1.2 billion in 2005.

According to Assistant US Trade Representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific Barbara Weisel, the US wants to open negotiations with Vietnam on the Trade and Investment Framework Arrangement (TIFA).

The US already signed a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with Vietnam and granted the country Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR). Vietnam is a newcomer in the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Vietnam mainly exports coffee, tea, footwear, crude oil, seafood, apparel, rice and furniture to the US, and imports cotton along with power-generating equipment, fertilizers, optical and photo equipment, and vehicles. (People’s Army)
