Za Hung Joint Stock Co. Mar 22 kicked off construction of a 30-megawatt hydropower plant with total investment of VND550 billion (US$34.3 million) on A Vuong river in the central province of Quang Nam, state media reported.

Once in place in November 2008, Za Hung’s first turbine will generate about 124 million kWh a year for the national power grid.

Quang Nam is also speeding up construction of the 190-MW Song Tranh 2 hydropower station to operate two turbines, in Sept 2009 and Nov 2010 respectively, generating 679.6 million kWh each year.

Electricity of Vietnam, the sole country’s provider, plans to build 30 hydropower plants with combined capacity of 1,800 MW in central and coastal provinces between late 2006 and 2013, in a bid to turn Tay Nguyen into the country’s largest hydropower center. (Labour, Vietnam & World Economy)
