Intel Starts Construction on Worlddâs Largest Chip Plant in Vietnam
The world largest chip producer Intel kicked off construction on its US$1 billion chip assembly and testing factory in Saigon Hi-Tech Park (SHTP), Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday.
The plant, the largest of its kind in the Intel assembly and testing global network, is expected to operate in mid 2009, providing employment for up to 4,000 locals.
At the ground breaking ceremony, Mayor Le Hoang Quan spoke highly of Intel investment operations in the city, promoting the city's high-tech development and economic growth.
Once completed, the facility, with a yearly estimated turnover of US$5 billion, will contribute considerably to the city’s earnings.
Intel received an amended license last November after scaling up investment from US$605 million to US$1 billion.
Rick Howarth, CEO of Intel Products Vietnam, said Intel planned to invest a further US$1 billion in Vietnam.
The final decision would be made based on factors like returns from the first phase and global market demand.
The Vietnam facility will be the 7th assembly and test site in Intel's global network. The others are in Penang and Kulim in Malaysia, Cavite in the Philippines, Chengdu and Shanghai in China, and San Jose in Costa Rica. (Local sources)
