The Vietnamese Ministry of Trade (MoT) is planning to set up the Vietnam E-Commerce Association (VECOM), at the instigation of enterprises engaged in the activity.

The ministry recently formed the VECOM lobbying board chaired by Dr Le Dang Doanh, Head of the Central Institute for Economic Management.

The board is a non-profit organization that will bring together e-commerce firms under its umbrella.

It plans to send the VECOM establishment documents to the Ministry of Home Affairs for approval this month.

According to the MoT’s recent report, only 8 per cent of Vietnamese enterprises use e-commerce in business, 55 per cent of them having participating in one or more transactions of this kind.

The figure marks a big improvement for Vietnam’s IT sector, as few local businesses accessed e-commerce just two years ago.

Up to 81.5 per cent of companies use email in business with partners. However, the rate of on-line payment still remains low at only 3.2 per cent of enterprises, mostly in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. (Young People Daily, MoT)
