Australian Ensham Resources Pty Ltd has just announced plans to construct a 3,600- megawatt thermal power plant in Southern Vietnam, valued at US$4 billion.

If approved by the Vietnamese government, Ensham Resources Pty Ltd is expected to kick off construction on the work in 2008 in southern Kien Giang province, 250 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, and complete it in 2012.

Kien Giang provincial authorities agreed to enlarge the port, allowing 60,000-ton coal ships to access the plant.

Vietnam is now badly in need of more power generation facilities, to ensure enough electricity to sustain high economic growth.

The ASEAN country needs about US$4 billion a year to develop power generation sources, including 58 hydropower plants with combined capacity of 21,300MW valued at US$80 billion between 2006 and 2025.

Electricity Group of Vietnam is expected to mobilize VND14 trillion to form 30 electricity JS Companies, of which 24 are to be engaged in power generation work.

Vietnam’s power consumption has an average annual rise of 17 per cent in recent years, and domestic power generation sources are facing difficulty meeting the country’s power demand. (Vietnam & World Economy, Labor)
