Cuu Long Vinashin Steel Joint Stock Co, an affiliate of Vinashin Business Group, December 20 churned out the Vietnam's first batch of hot-rolled steel, Trade newspaper said Tuesday.

The first batch was made by the fourth steel mill in a steel and cast iron complex costing VND1.4 trillion with a combined capacity of 1.2 million tons Cuu Long Co built in 2004 in Hong Bang district of northern Haiphong city.

The company expected the facility will produce 500,000 tons of products each year, or 20 per cent of Vietnam’s hot-rolled steel import demand for shipbuilding or machinery manufacture.

The first batch of steel sheets measured at 48 meters in length and 2 meters in width was made with advanced technologies, said the newspaper without mentioning of the quantity of the batch.

Cuu Long Vinashin hopes to put the two remaining steel ingot refinery mills in the complex into operation in the first quarter of 2008. (Trade)
