U.S.’s Deputy Secretary of State, John Negroponte and Vietnamese high-ranking officials Sept 11 had meetings to discuss bilateral cooperative, regional and international issues as part of co-efforts to beef up the bilateral comprehensive ties, Vietnam News Agency said on September 11.
John Negroponte met Premier Nguyen, leaders of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Education and Training, National Defence and Police in Hanoi, the agency said.
The U.S. diplomat emphasized that the United States will expand multilateral cooperation with the government of Vietnam, increase supports in de-mining programs, provide information on Vietnamese soldiers missing in action (MIA) and mitigate dioxin impacts, the agency added.
The U.S. government will help train 10,000 doctorates for Vietnam from now to 2020, he said, proposing that the two governments should arrange to dispatch missions to soon meet to finalize cooperative programs.
PM Nguyen for his part highly appreciated John Negroponte’s fruitful results of working sessions with related agencies of the government of Vietnam in order to promote the comprehensive ties, particularly in trade, investment, education and training, environment and efforts to deal with impacts of sea level rise as well as climate changes.
John Negroponte is on his visit to Vietnam from Sept 11 to 14.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)’s Acting Chairman Nancy Nord is also on her trip to Vietnam from Sept 10 to 16 to help improve the food safety.
Nancy North and Ngo Quy Viet, head of the Department for Standards, Measurement and Quality have signed a joint statement to start to implement bilateral cooperation in the field, the state-run Vietnam Post newspaper said. (Government source, VNA)
