The Government of Vietnam is to provide VND100 billion (US$5.9) annually to help the poor to find work overseas.

The project is part of an effort to implement a government resolution on supporting rapid and sustainable poverty reduction in the 61 poorest districts that has been recently submitted to the government by the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA).

The project has set a target of sending between 5,000-6,000 workers abroad each year during the 2009-2010 period, increasing to 50,000-60,000 laborers during 2011-2015, Deputy Minister of MOLISA, Nguyen Thanh Hoa, said.

The project will support the beneficiary workers through the provision of funding for vocational training and foreign-language courses, as well as other necessary education.

Most workers will be sent to medium-income markets while highly-trained and skilled workers will be posted to countries with higher average incomes.

The ministry has instructed the Center for Overseas Workers to prepare to send 1,000 workers to the Republic of Korea and Japan under this program.

According to MOLISA, the rate of poverty in these districts is at least 50 per cent, 3.5 times more than the national average.

In 2006-2007, the number of workers from the 61 poorest districts who found employment overseas stood at approximately 5,000, representing almost 3 per cent of the total number of Vietnamese workers sent abroad during this time period. (VietNamNet)
