Construction on Vietnam’s longest and the most modern suspension bridge worth VND13.6 trillion (US$780 million) was kicked off March 7 in Hanoi, state media reported.

The capital includes a loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and contributions from the Vietnamese government.

The four-lane Nhat Tan bridge is nearly 9 kilometers long, 33.2 meters wide, with 3.7 kilometers section spanning the Red River.

The bridge will be the sixth to reach across the Red River following Long Bien, Thang Long, Chuong Duong, Vinh Tuy and Thanh Tri bridges.

It will link the capital city with industrial parks in northern Vietnam’s Thang Long-Van Tri, Dong Anh-Co Loa and Gia Lam-Sai Dong-Yen Vien.

Work on the bridge is scheduled for completion for 34 months.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, Minister of Transport Ho Nghia Dung said the bridge is expected to become a new symbol of Hanoi in the industrialization period.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung said this was among the country’s key traffic projects and asked the Ministry of Transport to instruct project management agencies, contractors and consultants to ensure construction pace and labor safety. (Vietnam Economic Times, VNS)
