The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the World Bank May 13 opened workshop discussing strategies to develop stable agriculture in Mekong Delta region, local media reported.

The Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development said in a statement Mekong Delta is the region with most favorable conditions for agriculture development in Vietnam.

The region accounts for 50% of Vietnam’s total paddy area, 71% of aquaculture area, 30% of agricultural production value and 54% of aquatic product output.

But agricultural mechanization and technical application in the region are still stagnant, making its farm produce less competitive than that in neighboring countries like Thailand.

WB’s official, Mr. Kodderitzsch, said at the workshop that to develop stable agriculture in the region, Vietnam should map out comprehensive development plans, covering agricultural modernization, water management, job and industry development.

The official promised the WB will support Vietnam to develop sea, road and air traffic network, expand urban, improve health care and education services, cope with climate change and protect environment in the Mekong Delta region.

For stably agricultural development in the region, the MARD asked localities to manage land, stabilize farm produce price and consumption. (Vietnamplus, Youth)
