Ho Chi Minh City has witnessed a sharp rise in the numbers of foreign laborers over the past few years, said the municipal Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs.

In the first four months, the number of foreign workers licensed by the city accounted for 50 per cent of last year’s total figure.

As of late April this year, the city had licensed over 14,600 foreign workers from 73 countries and territories worldwide, according to the department.

The department also noted that many local enterprises are using unlicensed international laborers.

To control the inflow of illegal overseas workers flocking into the city, HCM City will set up two teams to inspect foreign worker management in big projects and companies.

The city is now home to over 3,000 foreign representative offices, but only 157 of those are granted with labor registration certificates.

Experts said the growing number of foreign workers in Vietnam, including unskilled laborers, is putting the job stability of the local workforce at risk. (Youth)
