Southern Vietnam has targeted to reap US$48.63 billion from goods shipments in 2009, a slight on-year increase of 1.7 per cent, according to officials at a two-day conference held in the southern province of Binh Duong.

The figure will account for 75.39 per cent of Vietnam’s total expected export value this year, officials noted.

The region is boosting its exports with a view to fetching a US$5-billion monthly export value on average in the second half of this year.

In the first half, southern Vietnam’s exports decreased by 7 per cent to US$18.5 billion. Some localities with large export values also saw sharp falls such as Binh Phuoc province (-34 per cent), Ho Chi Minh City (-21.8 per cent), and Dong Nai province (-6.6 per cent).

The region posted a total export turnover of US$47.8 per cent in 2008, up 21.7 per cent on-year and making up 76 per cent of Vietnam’s whole exports. (Customs)
