Authorities in Hanoi have recently approved a project worth nearly VND6 billion (US$355,029) to map an electricity development plan set to begin in 2011 and continue to 2015, with a vision of further development through 2020.

The project aims to ensure a sufficient power supply for the socioeconomic development of newly expanded Hanoi, the capital city’s Vice Mayor, Nguyen Huy Tuong said.

The project will draw out plans to build and upgrade municipal power lines with a capacity ranging from 6kV to 220 kV to improve power transmission, Tuong noted.

The planning will be implemented beginning in June this year and will be completed in the second quarter of 2010, and, then, the Ministry of Industry and Trade should approve the plan, he added.

Hanoi’s expanding population has now reached 6.3 million, up from the earlier 3.4 million, causing electricity demand to rise.

The power consumption of Hanoi now averages over 30 million kWh per day with the figure peaking at 32.4 million kWh on June 10 with the highest capacity of 1,540 MW, due to extremely hot weather. (Investment)
